MdB (Alliance 90/The Greens), chairwoman of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Consumer Protection
Renate Künast was born in Recklinghausen in North Rhine-Westphalia in 1955. She studied social work in Düsseldorf. From 1977 to 1979 she worked as a social worker in the penal institution of Berlin-Tegel. She subsequently studied law and graduated as a lawyer, completing her second state examination in 1985.
She joined the Alternative List of West Berlin in 1979 and has assumed various functions for the party since then. She acted as parliamentary group chairwoman during the red-green coalition in Berlin. When the red-green coalition in Berlin parliament ended, Künast continued to serve as a Member of Parliament in the parliamentary group of Alliance 90/the Greens, first as a chairwoman until 1993 and then as the spokeswoman for legal politics.
From June 2000 to March 2001 Renate Künast was elected chairwoman of the federal executive board of the party Alliance 90/The Greens.
She was Federal Minister of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture from January 2001 to October 2005 and chairwoman of the parliamentary group Alliance 90/The Greens from October 2005 to 2013.
Since January 2014 is Renate Künast chairwoman of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Consumer Protection.
