President of the German Federal Music Industry Association
Dieter Gorny is president of the German Federal Music Industry Association (Bundesverband Musikindustrie – German IFPI) and professor for cultural and media studies at the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf.
Since 2000, he has been a member of the executive board of the German Music Council, and since 2007 has served as chairman of the supervisory board for the Initiative Musik. In 2011, he was appointed as managing director of the European Centre for Creative Economy, and Special Advisor for Creative and Digital Economy to the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy.in March 2015.
Gorny studied composition and music theory, and in the 1970s played as a contrabassist for a number of groups including the Bochumer Symphony. He founded the Popkomm music conference, and also he founded the VIVA music channel, which he led until 2004, initially as managing director, and from 2000 onward as CEO of VIVA Media AG. Following VIVA’s acquisition by Viacom in 2004, Gorny served as executive vice president of MTV Networks Europe until 2006.
